A Sentinel's Saga: Introduction

For billions of years, life on Earth has dominated and colonized the planet, fully demanding its resources and taking sanctuary in her soil. From the dawn of single-celled organisms to the rise of multicellular plants and animals, they each lie in the stars and watch over their progeny. The normal state of nature is disrupted. Namely, the creative vigor of chaos and the regulating forces of order. The animals sought to tend to the balance by creating the humans, a species of animal that acts as a filter for the energy of the spirits. This “faunal” energy courses through their veins to differentiate them from the beasts that scour the land. Humans are forever tasked with the responsibility of tending to nature and restoring harmony to the Earth.

HISTORY
In the beginning, there was only Chaos and Order. Earth, the Sky, and Sea had no existence. Firstly, winged Chaos laid a germless seed in the bosom of the infinite deeps of Order, and from this, after the revolution of long ages, sprang forth the graceful Earth with her glittering green wings, swift as the whirlwinds of the tempest and strong like the roots of the mountains tall. She mated in the deep abyss with dark Chaos, winged like herself, and thus hatched forth life, which was the first to see the Sun. The Earth mother embodied both Chaos and Order to create and shape the reality we know until the apex of her achievement was born, and so she rested. Since then, the balance has been upset by the extreme energies lying dormant within her womb.

The triad of energy involving Chaos, Order, and the Earth has succumbed to illness that has wilted their minds. This is causing them to lash out and overwork ultimately leading them to believe the eradication of all life is the solution and they especially despise humanity. Mother Earth is enlisting help because while powerful she too is incapable of directly influencing the mortal plane. She has since resurrected those extinct and returned to the ground, fooled the plants into thinking it is their time to rule once again, and constructed users of fungal energy as major power players. Yet hope lies with the Shamans and that which they serve, the Balance.

Long ago when the earth was still raw and primal, the land was plagued by a war that spanned eons. Both factions of the plant and animal kingdoms desired to be the dominant force on the planet. Although they couldn’t battle on the spirit plane they continually consumed and razed each other upon earth. The animals sought a gambit in creating the humans that would be of the same mettle as themselves. Humanity acted as a conduit for their own spiritual faunal energy enacting animal will upon the world. The plants followed suit and corrupted humans with their own floral energy. The war escalated with the rise of human blood until the mother Earth came to the spirits demanding harmony. They complied and began the long peace that we still have today.

WORLD
The seven main countries of Earth span tens of thousands of years through multiple different political and economic incarnations yet have stood the test of time in regards to general border, tradition, and environment. The cultures of these nations have never gone through any true dramatic change but evolution blossoming like neighbors on a branch. Such stability could only be grown by the grace of the spirits and those that preserve in their names. As a result, much of the culture among these countries has remained relatively unchanged throughout their sovereignty. The art, architecture, music, clothing, and cuisine while varied in their towns and cities is endemic to the cultural identity of their people

Kingdom of Roarhaven- The country of Roarhaven has been led by a family of kings since its formation at roughly the beginnings of human civilization. It has a cultural blend similar to that of the Japanese and Irish. Much of the art has been influenced by the Japanese style of woodprints and ink paintings while the clothing is more distinctive of Ireland and meets many of the needs of their climate. Clothing is practical over stylish because the strong population of working class individuals. Many of the townspeople fancy drinking and frequent many of the pubs across every town and city. The natives have a reputation for being unreasonably heavy drinkers and hardy brawlers. But much of the country is also a caste of intellectual, honorable, and conservative people. Roarhaven is significant for its contributions to the literary field lending a hand to a sea of subjects and commentaries. The small bands of active sentinels make the best of what they are given and follow the traditional ways of the order. Just like the country is known to do, the sentinels tend to value honor highly. Ireland, Denmark, Japan.

Geography: Roarhaven is constantly plagued by blizzards and snow. Rainfall and cloud cover is abundant as well. The coast is elevated above a salty black sea to create high expansive peninsulas. Vegetation is lush with thick woodland blanketing the nation. Most of the country is a taiga zone of coniferous forests but the landscape is brushed with colorful cherry blossoms and other red trees. Sometimes broadleaved trees and shrubs are found on the forest floor. Where it isn’t snowing, moss can be found on top of everything. Much of the south is just highland featuring rolling hills with plains as far as the eye can see. Occasionally, the country is covered in mist and fog where many villages are centered on the numerous mountain ranges across the country. It is infamous for two things: elevation and hot springs. The mountains are known to extend beyond the clouds where conventional eyes see no peak. But the hot springs are where they get their main economic draw and tourism from. The springs naturally form all over the countryside releasing heated groundwater for the people to bathe in. For the tough people of Roarhaven surviving the environment is unpredictable and unforgiving. The weather changes periodically to reflect the peace and beauty of the countryside or the chaos and cruelty of the wild. During the Winter, it is a long period of snowfall and ice but during the spring it melts and the precipitation doesn’t end. Cool showers change the valleys and forests into near rainforests. A common feature of these rain forests is the Nurse log, a fallen tree which as it decays, provides ecological facilitation to seedlings and smaller organisms. The mild and wet environment supports a high diversity of fungi and mushrooms in particular are common. In the past, the country was ravaged by encroaching ice ages and glaciers producing crystal pure lakes and rivers.

Wildlife: Numerous algae and seaweed species are prevalent in the seas cultivating from the cooler and precipitating mainland. Several waterways and rivers find their way to the seas creating a brackish and saltier aquatic creature base. The agriculture relies on the whims of the weather and is mostly unsuitable for growing most types of crops. To the north precipitation is heavy but noticeably colder but the south is much warmer and arable. So, the number of pastoral animals is high compared to others. Pork, cattle, and sheep are the most common. The fishing industry is also large due to the rich endowed aquatic population including whales, dolphins, and seals. Mammals and birds are common to the area but reptiles and amphibians are rarer due to the cold. Animals of temperate, tundra, and subarctic climates find refuge in the cold.

Capital: Howlgate is its capital called so for being built into humongous cascading mountain ranges and surrounding forests adjacent that whistle and howl when strong winds blow through. The castle structures at Howlgate are quite ancient and well preserved and light their corridors dimly reflecting their sky. The people that live within are both rowdy and calm, a truly passionate people generally welcoming to all. The streets of the outer walls are nothing if not rough. The country is largely if not wholly dependent upon the harvest of their hunters and farmers and could be lost without a fraction of them. As a result, there isn’t much demand nor market for other work. Most labor is heavily physical and taxing on its citizens forcing even children to work.

Hightalon Republic- It differs largely from Roarhaven in both culture and government. The culture is both like China and Spain. Hightalon is heavily industrious, always finding ways around the order to take the next big step in technology. There is a relatively strict hierarchy that borders on utilitarianism. There is also great respect of authority among the citizens as well. The rulers tend to rule the countryside with an iron fist. The country is an absolute monarchy and at times could even be called a dictatorship. It is the most advanced of the nations with steam and gas power although they use it cautiously for fear that the wild may retaliate. Many of the peasants live in poverty and are nomadic. The country manages to survive through the outsourcing of production and leading in science and technology being where much of the worlds inventions are made. China, Mexico, Spain.

Geography: Hightalon is covered with bamboo forests and volcanic structures with rivers of lava flowing through the landscape continually changing the terrain. The intense topographical differences in the country are mostly due to the volcanic activity leaving most of it inhabitable for its constantly changing. Thus, the cities populated by humans are dense and tend to extend high in the sky. Any type of agriculture is difficult and many of their citizens live in perpetual poverty. A sizable portion of the people have resorted to a nomadic lifestyle following the migratory animals. The north is mostly open plains with the south being more heavily jungled, the only thing separating them is their temperate forests.

Capitol: Brightmane is its capitol city called so for being built upon an inactive volcano that is abundant in obsidian glass. When the sun shines through, rays of light dance in the streets. Though not exactly a cultural melting pot, Brightmane is the most densely populated city in the world thanks to their lumbering sky scrapers that scratch the clouds. Industry is large with the citizens competing for business and marketing opportunities.

United Horndale- It is a wealthy state that is made up of diverse ethnic groups and cultures. This country is friendly to all due mostly to their large sums of money; they act as bankers and backers to most willing to offer their services. Their culture is rich with food and clothing and acts as a mecca for the rich and celebrity alike. The architecture is vast and covers huge areas encompassing many different shapes and angles. The continual success of the nation has led to a highly autonomous government among its people even to the point of displaying powerful provinces and eccentric cultures. Rome, India, Greece.

Geography: Marshy swamps and connections of delta rivers make up a hefty portion of the country especially towards the south coast. Lush vegetation and rich healthy soil make their land highly suitable for growing crops of many types. Unfortunately, they are usually forced to import their agricultural meat, yet maintain a healthy hunting practice thanks to the number of hooved animals in the area. To the north is highly wooded with tropical forests and in the south marshy wetland with expansive valleys. Animals congregate and gather in their wilds due to the centrality and abundance of their lands. They experience mild wet winters and hot dry summers.

Capitol: Rosemont is its capitol city called so for being centered in a lake called the Lotuspool that drops more than 400 feet. It acts as a submarine sinkhole that is constantly swirling and collecting all manner of flowers and blossoms from different regions across the continent. From the capitol harbor, ships and vessels ship goods to each of the countries due to the network of rivers afforded them.

Scalestone Confederacy- To the south are huge bustling cities that treasure creativity and industry ruled by and for artisans. The country survives off its mining and mechanical blacksmithing. Native America, Russia, France

Environment: The largest and most diverse of the kingdoms, it’s a state on the eastern shores of bleak plains and rocky hills. To the north large scarlet and golden forests grow annually all year. It has a wide natural resource base, including major deposits of timber, petroleum, natural gas, coal, ores, and other mineral resources. Most of Scalestone consists of vast stretches of plains that are predominantly steppe to the south and heavily forested to the north, with tundra along the northern coast. It possesses 10% of the world's arable land with its vast landscapes featuring record temperatures at both ends of the spectrum owing to its arid climate. The country only experiences summer and winter seasons because of the coast and mountains mingling weather. It is possibly the most diverse of all the nations in terms of geography and wildlife. The coastline on the eastern shores of the country are highly mountainous and hilly.

Capitol: Tuskford is its capitol city called so for being built upon the jagged bones of giant animals that once roamed the earth. Much of the country is home to a graveyard of animals and scalding geysers that tear up its landscape. Earthquakes are common and quite vicious.

Quillsend Empire- It has led a functioning Republic since its reformation. Since the laws and rights have blown through like a hurricane as well as the leaders who passed them. It has always been a hotbed for political issues made by the people. Persia, Australia, Africa.

Environment: The country covers a vast realm, but its realm is significantly composed of deserts and thus has little productivity. Because there is very little rainfall throughout the year, the people of the country live in villages built on one of the desert's many oases. Despite the country's extremely harsh environment, it has a large population that finds a way to survive. It is home of Coralridge, a formerly underwater ocean that has since dried up and elevated into a dried canyon coral reef.

Capitol: Venomreach is its capital city called so for the rivers of water replaced by toxic poisons and acids. Venomreach is largely isolated from the rest of the world due to its inaccessibility, and so must develop self-sufficient behavior going as far as developing occupational careers as assassins and bandits

Commonwealth of Kingsfin Isles- The people are rampant with thugs and pirates but their export is mainly seafood for the oceans surrounding them are a hotbed for fish. The sovereign of the nation is known as the King of Thieves and takes pleasure in the oppression of the weak. Indonesia, Caribbean, Pacific Islands.

Environment: It is an archipelago of islands that are constantly plagued by thunder storms and typhoons. The islands haven’t stopped raining in centuries.

Capitol: Stormwatch is its capitol city called so for its constant harsh weather and that the castle resides upon its highest point atop a raging waterfall.

The Wingwood- It is an expansive and thick collection of rainforests with one mountain sized tree at the center. Not much is known about this country as it is very dangerous, much legend and mythology surrounds its inhabitants, if it has any. Many brave adventurer’s journey to the center on the belief that riches are destined to reward them. Very little make it to the Wingwood, and even fewer have made it back. The many plants and mushrooms here are strangely colored blue and glow at night illuminating like stars on the ground. Capitol: Vineguard is its capitol called so for the temple that is rumored to reside at the center composed entirely from the roots of the center tree. Thailand, Brazil, Congo.

Icevale- It is the coldest, driest, and windiest continent with glaciers surrounding it. The continent is unknown to most and is home to the Shamans who commune with the spirit world. Most animals are not found here and the Shamans live exclusively off the gifts given from the spirits. Jawlight is the capitol city called so for the aurora that is constantly painting the sky day and night.

The Milksea and Honeyrun Falls- a river rapid of cream and nectar that attracts all manner of animals like a supernatural watering hole. The falls converge at the Milksea whereby they both mix to create canals that are at the center of the continent leading animals from every corner of the globe. No one knows why such a biological oddity exists but some say it is the womb of the Earth. The Honeyrun and the Milksea are never in the same place every year and crop up only once for a season. It seems to travel underground and swell up until it bursts somewhere. This is a primary reason why so many species are not only scattered across the continent by also why it can be such an eclectic mix of them appearing in strange locations. Mass migrations are made to these waters annually.

Ice volcanoes- they are largely condensed at the south pole and instead of spewing hot magma they exude volatile liquids and gases such as methane, ammonia, and nitrogen that are both toxic and freeze just about anything they touch. They can also lay dormant in some areas that spread a chilling effect on the surrounding environment.

Additional Locations- Maggotmouth Lake, Bloodwell, Mudport, Silkshire, Oldfang, Ironhoof, Featherfall, Godshell, Strongbeak, Oakbridge, Thornfield, Skyworth, Earthden, Maplecourt, Pinemoor, Fossilkeep, Furhelm, Ashmark Peak, Eggcrest, Cloudhill, Skullhedge, Mistmarch,

Additional Phenomena- Rock rain, Spore snow, Sea Trees, Hive buildings, Sea flowers/fruit, Sand sea, Glass forest, Glowing sea, Crystal Cave

SENTINELS
While each country has its own guard that act as soldiers for the state, the Sentinels are technically above the law and have the right to do whatever it takes to protect the wild, even if it means tearing down a government. It is the Sentinels duty to uphold order by checking to see if they are working within the guidelines set by the heavens and the earth, including but not limited to: fishing, hunting, farming, mining, and building. All men are limited to the amount that they may shape and receive of resources each year. Failing to abide by the law can result in incarceration, exile, and even execution. The Sentinels police a given area or jurisdiction as “ecology cops” and operate as both militia and police. Depending upon their branch and designation, they are trained in: law enforcement tactics and combat of differing degrees and types, emergency response search and rescue, education in obtaining and preserving knowledge of nature, regular maintenance on infrastructure and advanced equipment, and even political administration and management.

Badges- each member of the Sentinels carries a dagger etched with the symbols and rites of the order. Each rank has a different dagger they wield of varying value and material. The thought is that instead of being gifted a useless scrap of metal that serves little practical use, that members have something that would no doubt save their lives in many situations and be a symbol for the enduring strength of their laws and duties. The rank and measure of a member corresponds to the material their badge is made of, the higher the value the higher the rank.

Initiate

Fish and Game Branch- the most widespread and numerous branch of the Sentinels whose main task is to conserve the biodiversity of all animals. Because of this they are also the most popular branch, but it is also a difficult job as they constantly battle high level threats. They are trained to survive in every climate and biome and are educated on a variety of organisms.

Air Pollution Branch- their main task is to monitor and address chemicals and pollutants that may be in the air. Though they occasionally deal with flying animals their primary concern is the atmospheric condition. They also predict and interpret the weather and seasonal patterns to maintain its balance. They are trained to be paratroopers and flying soldiers or pilots.

Water Pollution Branch- they also monitor chemicals and pollutants though mainly in the ocean, lakes, and other waterways. Though Fish/Game is also responsible for aquatic life, Water Pollution has the most contact with the sea and it’s organisms and so primarily concern themselves with it. They are trained in marine warfare and ship operation.

Forestry and Mining Branch- though not the most popular it is certainly one of the more respected branches to join mainly because of how difficult the job is. Their primary task is to monitor integral geological and floral deposits. This is considered the most dangerous job simply because of the strictly human involved crime associated. It is generally passed over for the lack of animal concern. They are trained in the study of plants and minerals as well as skills in deduction and data collection to prevent and thwart crime.

Farm and Waste Branch- without a doubt the most inglourious and reviled branch to join. This is mostly because they rarely need to venture into the wilderness. Their concerns are mostly agricultural and though this is an important job in balancing nature and man most find it boring and low risk. Dealing with waste also puts them in many urban environments and close to many societal annoyances though they are the most preventative branch because of their proximity to civilization.

Squad- a group of 2-4 members that work in the field and patrol together, they can often solve and investigate cases as permanent partners too

Company- typically the group associated with a given precinct including noncombatants, the size ranges anywhere from 8 to 800 members and is always led by a paladin class member

Battalion- multiple companies banded together to form an army usually led by a consul or higher

Regiment- the army and staff of a branch each being about 5,000-10,000 individuals usually led by a master

RANKS
Magister- the head of the order and leader over every Sentinel member, he regulates the rules and directives of every Sentinel but his will is not absolute as it does not supercede the laws of the wild. He lives and operates the order out of the home base which is located in the north pole. Compared to other ranks within the order, the Magister can be almost guaranteed to never see combat and field work as the position is primarily administrative.

Master- a single leader of a given branch possessing power over an entire regiment of consuls, paladins, knights, and initiates in every country. They rarely must ask permission or answer to the magister above them and are generally fully autonomous. They typically possess a plated dagger with a valuable and lustrous metal. Apart from other leaders in the Sentinels, Masters all operate out of a mobile command center and travel between territories supporting and leading out of the various capitals. This allows them to personally see to each of the environmental status’ of the world while commanding their branch in that area. Occasionally they will return to the Sentinel home base for a while though this is uncommon.

Consul- the leader of all companies and precincts in their national authority that is their country, there are six consuls to a branch. A consul has power over every paladin, knight, and initiate under him in the country. They typically possess a steel dagger and won’t usually head out to do field work unless for the highest level missions. They are the best and brightest at what they do and are very strong warriors in their own right. They can be found at a headquarters in their nation’s capital along with Consuls from other branches. They oversee the activities of their precinct jurisdictions and work to enact and enforce the rules among the Sentinels. They might also work to acquire resources for those under their watch.

Paladin- a high level member usually a leader of a precinct will have this rank commanding and managing all the knights and initiates under them. The number of paladins in a district are always changing corresponding to the changing environment, but they are usually small in number as a rigorous test is required to become one. They are the highest level of field agent and usually the ones to travel cross country sometimes even working alone. Once becoming a paladin, you are not required to be a leader of a precinct and can work under another of your rank within a precinct or you can set off on your own as a nomadic policeman. They typically possess a crystal dagger and have much more freedom than knights and initiates. If a paladin is not a leader of a precinct but is a member of a company they mostly occupy leadership roles in their respective fields including combat, science, investigations, or even facilities. Regardless, paladins typically are heavily cross trained and have a variety of skills and knowledge.

Knight- a certified member of the Sentinels possessing the free range and standard power of any member. They hold rank over the initiate title and can often command them in small squads. There are different ways that each precinct ranks individual knights such as based on time within the order, or they can all have equal authority. They possess a bone dagger and typically only have a single designation that they specialize in.

Squire-
a newly appointed member of a branch literally at the bottom of the hierarchy. The number of initiates in even a single branch is too numerous and ever changing because of the provisional nature of the rank. They possess a wooden dagger and do not formally retain the full rights of a sentinel such as their ability to ignore stately law. They cannot act by themselves requiring the command of another higher sentinel, for this reason they are usually closely guided or tasked. They typically are not sent on high risk or dangerous missions. They are relegated to manual labor or assessment jobs. Initiates can be inducted and can either stay at a precinct to train and learn or can be sent to academies where initiates formerly are taught. They are not usually considered as part of a particular branch as the nature of their status is to relegate them to a designation and branch at the point of their graduation.
